What is an Inteferometer :: physics light optics

A Michelson Interferometer is a device used to measure the speed of light in precise optical measurements. It does this by splitting light into two or more beams that recombine and interfere with each other causing the interference fringes. The interferometer basically consists of a light source, a beamsplitter, and two (or more) mirrors to reflect the light. The interference pattern for a Michelson interferometer is circular-- that is, it produces concentric circles of light and dark "fringes". When one mirror on the interferometer is moving, the path difference between the two split beams of light changes, and the interference pattern is seen Interference is a phenomenon that occurs when two photons of light interact with each other in such a way that their waves sum to either increase or decrease their total amplitude. Complete constructive interference occurs when two electromagnetic waves are of the same frequency and in phase; destructive interference occurs when two electromagnetic waves of the same frequency have a phase difference of one-half wavelength. When complete destructive interference occurs, no light can be detected. Similarly, complete constructive interference results in intensity quadrupling (intensity is proportional to the square of amplitude). The following picture demonstrates these effects. Originally, the inventors of the interferometer produced it to measure the speed of light so they could determine the existence of ether. Since then it has been important in measuring the wavelengths of light, using the wavelengths of light to measure very small distances (up to 0.5 microns), to measure extremely small times (up to 1x10-15 seconds), and to study optical media. Albert A. Michelson (1852-1931) The Michelson interferometer was invented by American Physicist Albert A. Michelson in 1887. Michelson was born in Strzelno (Poland) in 1852 and moved to American in 1855. When he was 17, he joined the United States Naval Academy in Anapolis, Maryland where he excelled in science subjects. Michelson later became a science instructor at the academy, but moved on to become a professor of physics at several universities. During the years of 1923-1927, he was president of the National Academy of Sciences. In 1907, he was the first American to be awarded the Physics Nobel Prize for his many efforts in optics. Michelson began experimenting with the interferometer in April of 1887. He came up with a system of mirrors and semi-transparent mirrors (or beamsplitters) for merging separated beams of light, which are coming from the same source. The system was set up so that the beam of light was split in two, sending each split perpendicular to each other, and then merging back so they â€Å"interfered† with each other.

Family Violence

1. What is the general in the particular with regards to abuse in this article? The article shows statistically that if you are male and have been a victim of violence or family violence you have a higher risk of becoming an abuser compared to someone who has not been victimized. And those family violence victims have a higher incidence of developing mental health issues and personality disorders, abuse drugs or alcohol, or have been abandoned as children.2. What is the strange in the familiar? The article shows how witnessing or being victimized by violence as a child or adolescent changed the perception of these offenders thinking and patterns of acceptable behaviors which made violence against another person to be acceptable practice.3. What might this article add to understanding global offenders? I think that it would be interesting to see how the statistics would change once the offenders went through extensive therapy. Would the therapy break or improve the cycle of violence? And by how much?4. What does this issue identify about potential social marginalization? Because these offenders have been victimized themselves they have become the perpetrator as this is what they know to be the norm for them. In times of crisis or change they would do what they know until they know better. Unfortunately the pattern of behavior has changed their view of what is normal behavior and they lack the skills to deal with change or crisis without violence. Thus turning a personal problem into a public issue.5. What does this article identify about potential social crisis? The potential social crisis in this article is that if the pattern of family violence is not broken it will be an inherited personality trait for the children who witness or are victimized by it, leading to more violent crimes and more dysfunction in families.6. After reading this article, what social change do you think needs to be adapted? I personally think and feel that violence of any type needs to be unacceptable in society and that society as a whole should speak out about this issue by providing lots of public awareness and free accessible counseling services to break the cycle of abusive behaviors.7. Who would you most likely speak out for (the offender or society)? I struggle with that decision as I can identify with both sides on one hand it is very sad that the offender had to witness or undergo abuse as a child which ultimately shaped them as adults. But on the other hand it is also horrible that society is at risk based on someone else’s poor choices therefore the cycle of violence continues.8. Apply the structural-functional. social-conflict, and symbolic-interaction theory to this article using each paradigm perspective, describe the issues of offenders. For the structural functional aspect the issues of the offenders would be that they hurt another human therefore they have to pay the price in jail. The social –conflict issue would be poor self-esteem , been abused or witnessed abuse themselves, possible mental health issues related to the abuse, eg. personality disorders and narcissistic personalities traits. The symbolic-interaction issues would be that they were raised in an environment of abuse therefore it is a pattern of behavior they know and are comfortable with and believe it is the norm to behave this way.9. Would this research be of greater interest to a sociologist favoring a structural-functional, social-conflict, or a symbolic-interaction paradigm? A sociologist favoring a symbolic-interaction paradigm because the article focuses on patterns of social interactions in specific settings in a micro level orientation. There is also scientific data to support the theory which would be of interest as well for a sociologist favoring this paradigm.10. Is this study, of male offenders only, guilty of sexism? No I don’t think so they were not comparing males to females they just gathered data from a particular group an d analyzed it based the level on violence that they had witnessed as children and how it affected them as adults. If they had compared the same data from females that would be sexism in my opinion. There is a lot of research and articles available about violence against women but not a lot about the male offenders to get a full view of the big picture it is worthwhile to look at all sides to gain a broader view of where the violence originated from in the first place.

Domestic Violence Understanding The Basics - 880 Words

Module 1: Domestic Violence: Understanding the Basics Module one focused on domestic violence and understanding the basics, which include the dynamics and common tactics that characterize domestic violence, impact on both the individual and society, and solutions to domestic violence. The website was easily accessible, and the information provided about the topic of domestic violence was both useful and interesting. Several statistics were given throughout the module that helped get across the seriousness of domestic violence. For example, one in four women are victims of domestic abuse within their lifetime. That statistic alone expresses how common domestic violence is within society. Overall, I would recommend this module as a useful tool. It helps educate individuals about what is classified as domestic violence, which include physical, sexual, and psychological attacks, personal narratives of individuals, and solutions to domestic violence. As well as, this is a great addition to the class in helping students better understand domestic violence, the impacts it has on the victim, and ways to help prevent domestic violence from occurring. College students are getting to that point in their life where they are looking for someone they may one day settle down with. Bartel Essay Example For Students

Bartel Essay I began my Hawthorne reading task with The Birth-Mark. I picked this story because I am familiar with the Maypole of Merrymount and Young Goodman Brown, and I wanted to try something different. I was pleasantly surprised with The Birth-Mark, in my mind it far surpasses the latter two stories. I think one of the most admirable traits of Hawthorne is his ability to write as though actions are taking place somewhere in the present. Aylmer could very well live today, somewhere in the world with his laboratory in the backyard. Men like Young Goodman Brown are everywhere in todays society, and, still, there are those who try and destroy that which they do not understand or refuse to understand like the Puritans in The Maypole of Merrymount. The Birth-Mark grapples with the scientific progress of the time. I think the theme of humans trying to control nature with unfavorable results is prevalent in many works of the time, most notably Frankenstein. The fixation that Aylmer has on Georgianas birthmark is unnatural. Hawthorne correlates this quest for perfection with Aylmers intentions of formulating an elixir of life and mastering the art of alchemy. Maybe Hawthorne is drawing a parallel here between the scientists of his day trying to control nature and by the failure of scientists to do this in the past. Aylmers attempt to control nature leads to the death of his wife which is unnecessary, she is quite content with the minor facial blemish until he makes a big deal about it. Maybe this too is a parallel between the mass majority being content with the state of the world and a certain few who would like to make it better, and, in turn, destroy it. I can understand Hawthornes idea. I live in constant fear of nuclear war and the technology that has made it available. But, I am grateful for the medical advances we have today. It is a double-edge sword. I am not implying that Aylmer is an evil man, I do not think he is aware of the chaos he can arouse. In fact, he is merely concerned with progress and saving humans from their own mortality and humanness. There is one imparticular line from the story that I sound most engaging: Hawthornes description The scenery and the figures of actual life were perfectly represented, but with that bewitching, yet indescribably difference, which always makes a picture, an image, or a shadow, so much more attractive than the original. When I read this I stopped mid-story. This is a common theme throughout Romantic poetry I have encountered. Immediately it reminded me of Shellys To A Sky-Lark and Ode on a Grecian Urn by Keats. Both of these poems describe unattainable perfection. The skylarks song is beautiful, but it flies so high we are unable to see the creature and hense, the song seems to come from the heavens. In Ode, Keats spends much time describing the beauty of the grecian scene on the  vase but then refutes it withcold pastoral. Those two words could describe this short story. From the outside, Aylmer thinks that everything on Georgiana would be perfect if she didnt have the birthmark. What he doesnt realize is perfection is unattainable, except in our minds. The Maypole of Merrymount describes a maypole, and its significance in American history. Hawthorne creates a scene of revelry almost a Mardi Gras scene and has it destroyed by the Puritans. This story reminds me of the Christian Creation Story with the maypole being the Garden of Eden and the Puritans being allegorical figures of Satan. Hawthorne seems to blame the demise of the American freespirit on the Puritans. I dont have much to comment on this story; it is really a cut and dry case. I think Hawthorne is harsh on the Puritans. I read somewhere that the view we have of the Puritans today is somewhat misleading. They did not always wear black and never laughed. Maybe to some, they did cause the utopic garden of America to be shattered. After reading The Maypole of Merry Mount and Young Goodman Brown it is quite obvious the contempt Hawthorne holds for the Puritans. .u30381bb9ba790c7e511ed845e8c41018 , .u30381bb9ba790c7e511ed845e8c41018 .postImageUrl , .u30381bb9ba790c7e511ed845e8c41018 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u30381bb9ba790c7e511ed845e8c41018 , .u30381bb9ba790c7e511ed845e8c41018:hover , .u30381bb9ba790c7e511ed845e8c41018:visited , .u30381bb9ba790c7e511ed845e8c41018:active { border:0!important; } .u30381bb9ba790c7e511ed845e8c41018 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u30381bb9ba790c7e511ed845e8c41018 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u30381bb9ba790c7e511ed845e8c41018:active , .u30381bb9ba790c7e511ed845e8c41018:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u30381bb9ba790c7e511ed845e8c41018 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u30381bb9ba790c7e511ed845e8c41018 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u30381bb9ba790c7e511ed845e8c41018 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u30381bb9ba790c7e511ed845e8c41018 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u30381bb9ba790c7e511ed845e8c41018:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u30381bb9ba790c7e511ed845e8c41018 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u30381bb9ba790c7e511ed845e8c41018 .u30381bb9ba790c7e511ed845e8c41018-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u30381bb9ba790c7e511ed845e8c41018:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Brian Friel"s Translations EssayIn Young Goodman Brown, Brown is led on a path where he encounters the devil and realizes that everyone surrounding him in his Puritan neighborhood is evil at heart. He learns his father and grandfather before him did the devils work, as well as the women he holds with utmost admiration. Brown turns from Faith his wife in one sense and his actual faith in another when he learns that everything he believed in is a sham. I feel as though I cannot write about this story without mentioning the fact that it is a story about good and evil where evil prevails. Goodman Brown is a weak man presumably coming from weak stock. I suppose according to Hawthorne it is the existence of Puritan blood in his veins, which makes him a cowardly man. He is a conformist, instead of standing against the wrongs of his community he embraces the same fate as everyone else. The theme of the story carries through to todays society. Oftentimes people will join groups or subscribe to ideologies they otherwise would not due to that fact that so many of their kin and respected leaders do. The story made me think of Thoreau. In Civil Disobedience, Thoreau actions toward the Mexican War are the antitheses of those that would have been done by Young Goodman Brown.

Warm Feelings For Cold Blood Essays - English-language Films

Warm Feelings For Cold Blood In Cold Blood is a novel written by Truman Capote in 1966. In Cold Blood is a true account of a multiple murder case that took place in Kansas in the 1950s. The book outlines a brutal murder case, but it shows the story from many perspectives, not just that of the law. Capote introduces you to the Clutter family, a well known, very hard working and loyal family to the community. The town of Holcomb is a small farming town. There is not much excitement in the town, and that is the way the people liked it. Everyone went to church and the community trusted each other, until the unthinkable happened. The towns most prominent family was killed. It is even worse when the only clues are two sets of boot tracks. Everyone in and around the town become scared because if such evil could be brought upon the best family known, what will happen to them? When Truman Capote wrote In Cold Blood, he wrote a masterpiece. When he wrote the book he developed the character Perry so that even after you wat ched him kill you feel sympathetic for him. He proves that you can even see some good in the worst of people. He does this by slowly developing Perrys character. He gave an in-depth view of Perrys world. He showed that Perry, although he had troubles in his life and sometimes had a total disregard for peoples life he also respected the people. Perry felt bad for some of the people he met. He also was willing to forgive people. Truman Capote was born Truman Streckfus Persons, in New Orleans September 30th 1924. His parents got a divorce when he was four and his mother later remarried and took on the last name of his stepfather. Capotes childhood was extremely insecure. He was handed back and forth between relatives. When Capote was a child he started to write to deal with the loneliness. At age ten, Capote made up his mind to become a professional writer. Because he knew what he wanted to do with his life, Capote shied away from formal schooling. (Breit) By his mid teenage years he w as technically accomplished writer. He stopped going to formal school when he was seventeen. He received a job at the New Yorker magazine. There he was just an errand boy but was noticed because of his mannerisms. During the early stages of World War II, Capotes interests still focused on his writing. (Norden p162) In June 1945, his short story Miraim brought him a lot of attention. It led to his first novel contract. Most of his early works were considered gothic but he also had many qualities that made people think that his work in the future had a lot of potential and those people were not wrong. (Breit) Capotes work did develop past gothicism although some of the old traits lingered in his later works. He had a wide range of attitude in his stories, from horror stories and psychological collapse to stories of magical children. Capote never married but became friends with some of Americas most glamorous women. Capote had been declared professionally dead several times but after e ach time he came back and proved that he was still alive and well. In 1959 Capote officially decided to start work on a nonfiction novel. In November of the same year he read about a multiple murder case in Kansas. He decided to use this crime as the bases for his novel. He devoted all his time and energy for the next six years on the development of this novel. He started his research before the murders were caught. He was in the town when they were put in Jail. Capote lived in the town of Holcomb for a while to gain the trust of the townspeople and of the murderers. In 1965 when Capote finally finished he published the finished product in four articles in the New Yorker and in 1966 and it published in book form. In Cold Blood earned Capote more money then all of his previous works put together. This book created a big controversy because Capote
